NURSERY DESIGN TIPS

When designing a nursery or a child’s room, plan ahead before you go all out on your baby's room furnishings.  It is extremely important to develop a budget and determine how much you are willing to spend.  Make a list of the items you would like incorporated into the nursery design and then assess the space and determine the focal point.

Many moms-to-be have a vision of their "dream nursery," but their nursery design ideas may not always be the most practical for a new baby.  Plan for the room to last through childhood and keep in mind that there must be room for a bed once your child grows out of the crib.

Choose furniture that is appropriate for any age and then use accessories to give the room a “baby feel.”  The longer you can use the furniture, the better the value.  For example, a convertible crib that converts to a toddler bed is very practical and will grow with your child.  Also, some changing tables double as a dresser.  These are just a couple of the cost effective ways you can design the nursery.

In most instances the crib is the focal point in any nursery. However, when selecting a crib make sure it meets all safety standards by checking for approval by the American Society for Testing and Material (ASTM). Cribs are now available in a multitude of designs.  Some may have hand-carvings while others may be decorated with unique designs or nursery themes.  Or, you may choose a cradle,  bassinet, or Moses Basket for your baby prior to introducing the crib.

Additional pieces of furniture include a rocker or glider, dresser, changing table, nightstand, and toy chest.  The choice is yours as to how much furniture you want in the nursery.

Once you’ve decided on a theme, it’s time to add the finishing touches.  Hang the wall decor and curtains.  Assemble the mobile and make up the crib.  Add the drawer pulls, area rugs, lamp and monitor.  You have now designed a nursery that is unique for your baby and all it took was a little planning.

Decorating a nursery can be so much fun!  So use your imagination and create that special space for you and your baby!  Please keep in mind that you don’t want to overdo it.  Whatever theme you choose, you might soon have many additional items donated by family and friends.
